Research Note: This post reflects my experience as a tattooed person living in Central Pennsylvania, seeking artists in our region. I’m not affiliated with any shops beyond my personal connections mentioned below, and I’m sharing my perspective as a local enthusiast, not a comprehensive industry guide.
Why Local Matters
In an age when you can scroll Instagram and find tattoo artists anywhere in the world, there’s still something valuable about knowing your local scene. Local artists mean:
- Easier consultations (in person rather than remote)
- Simpler scheduling and travel
- Ongoing relationship for future work and touch-ups
- Supporting your community
- Building connections in the local tattoo world
Central PA has a vibrant tattoo community that deserves recognition.
The Central PA Tattoo Landscape
What Our Region Offers
Geographic range: The Central PA scene spans from the Harrisburg metro area through Lancaster, Lebanon, York, and the surrounding communities. It’s a mix of urban shops and smaller-town studios.
Style diversity: Our region has artists working in most major styles—American Traditional, Neo-Traditional, realism, fine line, blackwork, Japanese-inspired, and more. You don’t have to travel to major cities to find quality work.
Accessibility: Compared to Philadelphia, New York, or other major tattoo destinations, Central PA often offers:
- Shorter wait times
- Lower cost of living reflected in pricing
- More personal artist relationships
- Less competitive booking
Finding Local Artists
Where to look:
Instagram: Search location-tagged posts, follow local shops, look for hashtags like #centralpatattoo, #harrisburgtattoo, #lancastertattoo.
Shop websites: Most established shops have websites with artist portfolios. Google shops in your area and browse their teams.
Word of mouth: Ask tattooed people in your community where they got their work. Personal referrals often lead to great discoveries.
Events: Local conventions and tattoo events (when they happen) are opportunities to see multiple artists and get work.
What to Look For in Local Artists

- How do staff treat walk-ins and inquiries?
- Does the environment feel safe?
My Local Experience
Where I’ve Gotten Work
I’ve been tattooed at a few shops in the Central PA area over the years. My approach has been to find artists whose portfolios impressed me and whose personalities worked for me.
What I’ve found:
- Quality varies widely, like anywhere
- Personal connections matter
- Some excellent artists aren’t heavily promoted online
- The community is generally welcoming
Local Connections
I want to mention Mike Mavretic at Skin Deep Tattoo LLC in Lebanon, PA—an artist I’ve featured previously on InkedWith. Mike does quality work and also happens to use products from Tattoo Luv (a family business I have a connection to). He’s an example of the talent available locally.
(Disclosure: I have a family connection to Tattoo Luv, which Mike uses in his practice. My feature of him reflects genuine appreciation for his work, not a paid promotion.)
What I’ve Learned
Local scene insights:
- Don’t assume you have to travel far for good work
- Build relationships with artists you like
- Support local when you can find quality
- The PA scene has more depth than outsiders might expect
